Potential cooperation between CICA and the EAEU presented at the Eurasian Economic Forum

Executive Director of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia Kairat Sarybay participated in the Eurasian Economic Forum in Bishkek (Kyrgyz Republic) on 26 May 2022 at the invitation of Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Mikhail Myasnikovich.

Kairat Sarybay made a presentation at the panel session “Interaction between the EAEU and Promising International Partners: Mutually Beneficial Cooperation in the Greater Eurasia” on the prospects of interaction between CICA and the Eurasian Economic Union.

In his presentation, the Executive Director pointed out the five key dimensions of cooperation of CICA – military-political, new challenges and threats, economic, environmental, and human. That being said, at least 60 percent of the CICA agenda is represented by economic issues, which clearly testifies to the Member States' focus on practical cooperation, which in turn opens up broad prospects for interaction with the EAEU.

Field for joint activity could be both “traditional” areas such as economy and finance, trade and investment, development of small and medium enterprises, agriculture and food security, and new and rapidly developing areas such as digitalization, information and communication technology, development of transportation corridors and multimodal transportation, epidemiological safety, energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy use, as well as tourism.

Cooperation between the CICA Business Council and the EAEU Business Council could become one of the practical forms of this work.

The CICA Executive Director emphasized that the wide range of economic opportunities, global and regional challenges, the goals of sustainable development and environmental protection are indicative of the need for greater interaction and connectivity on the Asian and – on a broader scale – on the Eurasian continent.

In December 2021, the CICA Member States decided to initiate contacts with the Eurasian Economic Commission in order to establish mutually beneficial and constructive interaction. The Eurasian Economic Commission has been invited to participate in the CICA Summit in Nur-Sultan on 12-13 October 2022.
