Remarks by the CICA Secretary General at the Mahatma Gandhi 155th birth anniversary, International non-violence day

Dear Ambassador Nagendra Prasad,

Excellencies,

Ladies and gentlemen,

It is my utmost pleasure to join you all on this solemn occasion to commemorate the 155th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest minds and statesmen in contemporary history – Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence, as the greatest force at the disposal of mankind, was truly visionary and remains universally relevant. Guided by these principles the international community has been striving to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence, including though establishing relevant institutions.

I believe that CICA certainly can be regarded as one of these multilateral mechanisms created to pursue peace, stability and prosperity in Asia. One can say that Gandhi’s vision is very much coherent with the Principles guiding relations among the CICA Member States, and I can only support this message.

Finally, I would like to commend the active role of India within our organization, contributing to its evolution and confidence building. Surely, the wisdom of Indian diplomacy can also be attested to Gandhi’s far-reaching ideas and legacy.

I thank you.
