On 24 August 2022, an online workshop on Sustainable and Secure Development of the Internet was held under the auspices of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA). The workshop was organized at the initiative of Russia in the framework of the new CICA confidence building measure “Security of and in the use of ICTs”, which is co-coordinated by Russia and China for 2022-2023.

The meeting was attended by the experts of line government agencies, businesses and academia from 18 CICA Member States – Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Russia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Türkiye, Uzbekistan and Viet Nam.

Chi Fang, Deputy Executive Director of the CICA Secretariat, addressed the participants of the workshop with welcoming remarks, noting the relevance of the topic in the context of the increased interest of the Member States in the development of ICTs and ensuring their security. The representative of the Secretariat stressed that the implementation of confidence building measures and the strengthening of practical cooperation remained the cornerstones for improving the efficiency of CICA, as one of the key multilateral mechanisms for interaction in Asia.

The participants of the workshop held a lively discussion and a productive exchange of views on a range of issues related to the Internet development, including strengthening international cooperation, regulating the national segments of the Internet and ensuring digital sovereignty. Representatives of Russia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan shared the experience of their countries in this area.
