The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in collaboration with the CICA Secretariat, hosted an online expert meeting on 28 November 2023 in preparation for the CICA Ministerial Conference on Environmental Issues scheduled to be held in Astana in 2024. This conference was initiated by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, at the Sixth CICA Summit in October 2022.
The meeting brought together experts from CICA Member States. Prior to this, two online consultations were conducted with the CICA environmental dimension coordinators and co-coordinators of priority areas to discuss the concept paper and organizational issues for the 2024 Conference. Anticipating a comprehensive approach, a series of expert meetings involving professionals from all 28 Member States are set to continue until the Conference takes place.
CICA Deputy Secretary General Ms. Zhang Ling underscored the value of this conference for CICA Member States in determining their responsibilities and raising awareness of environmental challenges more effectively. In her remarks, the Deputy Secretary General also emphasized the significance of regional and sub-regional collaboration among Member States, considering the environmental fragility of Asia. She pointed out that this conference will provide a great opportunity to expand practical cooperation within CICA in line with the Catalogue of Confidence Building Measures and Sustainable Development Goals.
Throughout the online meeting, representatives from CICA Member States delved into the major areas outlined in the draft Concept Paper. They emphasized key points of cooperation and interaction to effectively address environmental issues in the region, setting the stage for in-depth discussions and collaboration through a series of upcoming expert meetings.
