Kazakhstan Ministry of Ecology & Natural Resources and CICA Secretariat prepare high-level environmental conference




The Secretary General of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, Ambassador Kairat Sarybay met with the newly appointed Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, Yerlan Nyssanbayev. The two sides discussed preparation efforts for the Conference of Ministers of CICA Member States on Environmental Issues, an event proposed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during the Sixth CICA Summit on 13 October 2022.

Ambassador Sarybay highlighted that the CICA region, covering 90% of Asia, is subject to various climatic phenomena, and stressed the importance of collaboration in the environmental dimension of the CICA agenda. The Secretary General also emphasized that one of the key outcomes of the Conference could be a recommendation on the creation of the CICA Environmental Council.

Ambassador Sarybay also shared information about the functionalities of CICA's permanent consultative and advisory bodies such as the Youth Council, Business Council, and Think Tank Forum.

Minister Nyssanbayev emphasized the relevance of resolving regional environmental issues and expressed his readiness to work closely with CICA to organize the Conference at a high level in August 2024.

The parties noted the progress achieved in developing the draft concept of the event following two online consultations with CICA Member States coordinating activities in the CICA environmental dimension, and agreed to continue working together in this direction.
